BREATHWORK

“Feelings come and go like clouds in the sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor”
— - Thich Nhat Hanh

What is Breathwork?

Lisa Lawton kneeling on a rug with her eyes closed, holding her chest and stomach, practising meditation or mindfulness in a spacious room with natural light, plants, and crystals.

We are all breathing all day long. You, me and everyone else - We breathe automatically from the moment we are born, until we die. Breathing gives us life and the ability to experience our lives. However, we are usually unconscious and unaware of how we are breathing, and often, not breathing optimally for our bodies and health.

Your breath is a powerful self-care tool for regulation.

“Breathwork” is any type of intentional and conscious technique to regulate or control the breath, to create some kind of change in physiology. I first became aware of breathwork through yoga classes and then later through attending my first yoga teacher training. Indian yogic breathing or “pranayama” as it is known, translates to mean “extension of the life force” and this is an important part of a yogic practice and lifestyle.

However, for me, breathwork became a more meaningful tool and ritual at just the right time in my life. Breathwork gently brought me back to myself after a mental health crisis in 2022.

After suffering severe post natal anxiety and depression in 2021, breathwork became my sanctuary of safety and became a daily ritual in my recovery, where I found peace, calm and a deep sense of trust that everything was going to be ok. Later in 2022 I started my breathwork instructor course with Christopher Gladwell, and have been a certified instructor since 2024. In September 2026 I am embarking on further training with the inspirational teacher and author Rebecca Dennis.
